March, the month dedicated by Rotary literacy.

Oristano March 4, 2011

Dear friends, The Rotary year

walking fast. Here we come to march in the Rotary calendar that is dedicated to the priority theme of Literacy. Rotary International since 1985 has dedicated a month of the year, the eradication of illiteracy. He wanted to establish not only to improve your knowledge, teaching to read and write, but with the aim of achieving an even more important in a world with more knowledge, true peace and harmony among all peoples of the earth.
The goal, unfortunately, today is still far away. Worldwide, there are eight hundred million people who can not read and write (two thirds are women), three-quarters of whom live in developing countries, and approximately 75 million children are illiterate, yet they do not know what it means to go in school and who are exploited or forced to engage in work to help the family.

Free the world from the scourge of illiteracy means ensuring every individual the right to life and protection of their dignity, lifting it from that form of slavery and psychological subjection towards those who are educated. In summary

make each individual self-aware and capable their rights.
The central staff of Rotary International, with regard to literacy, has put together a nimble and efficient. It oversees thousands of projects to major projects such as building schools, training teachers, the care for young children. The 'Group of Resources for Literacy "is composed of a Coordinator and a Deputy Coordinator International, 6 Regional Coordinators from 39 area coordinators and a coordinator for each district. A capillary structure, able to intervene operatively in all countries in need.
Other resource group, similar structures, there are large teams for health care, hunger, poverty and the precariousness of life of all developing countries.
We Rotarians must continue to support this great effort, we feel more committed to spreading literacy that degrades and humiliates. All we can and must contribute.
Nelson Mandela, the first African President of color that managed to defeat apartheid, argued that "A country whose future leaders have not studied is a country that can not be successful."
We too in our club, Oristano, try to do our part with dignity. After the important contribution financial assistance of the Rotary Foundation, the next step will be the opening of the relief structure, "The Point Rotary," that shortly begin its operation on the premises of the Capuchin Friars in Via San Martino in Oristano.
Certainly a small "point", but it does not matter. Let us never forget that the sea is made up of many small drops of water that together make up oceanic masses.
Thank you!
is now our Secretary of the letter with the calendar of our commitments in March.

you soon!

Mario

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION AND ITS BENEFACTORS AWARDS: THE PAUL HARRIS FELLOW.

Oristano February 21, 2011

Dear friends,

Saturday 19th we worthily celebrated our 43rd anniversary, the qualified representative of the other service clubs operating in Oristano (Lions and Soroptimist) and delivery to several Past-President, the Treasurer and the Secretary of the Club "Paul HarrisFellow.
This year it was possible to assign a good number of these "awards" in virtue of our commendable effort to provide the Rotary Foundation the last means to declare officially closed and won a difficult battle against polio in the world.
I've been in transit for a PHF as Past President of the Club, but since mine was "a little different" from others delivered (I had previously received other PHF by the district for district offices held), not a few members who do not know the history of this award have asked me some explanations.
This fact has prompted me to report on this online newspaper, the long and prestigious history of the establishment and spread worldwide recognition of "Paul Harris".
is the story.

The highest award that Rotary International gives its supporters through its most important operating arm, the Rotary Foundation, is the "Paul Harris Fellow, whose acronym also identifies the PHF in non-Rotarians, given its unusual distribution.
stems from what this prestigious recognition that the world has been given to the most important people both political and economic and social changes that have been shown to recognize the values \u200b\u200band ideals of Rotary? It was founded after the death of our founder, Paul Harris, and accompanies the birth and evolution of its maximum operating arm: The Rotary Foundation.

few years after the founding of Rotary, as we all know took place in Chicago February 23, 1905, Paul Harris is increasingly convinced of the validity of his far-sighted idea of \u200b\u200bthe growing number of accessions and by the strong expansion of the association also outside of the United States. This growth, in some ways unexpected, leads to the Rotary quickly become "international", thus enhancing its value as a "service", coming from the goodness and the quality of his ideas, in short his "philosophy of service."

To better fulfill this function of "service" in 1917, Rotary's sixth president, Arch C. Klumph, decides to establish a financial reserve aside, a separate "endowment fund" reserved for humanitarian and educational initiatives. This forward-looking idea, it is only the beginning of a great adventure and will prove to be the "seed" of the more robust structure that is realized in a short time.
Ten years later, Congress in Minneapolis in 1928, the endowment fund became something more concrete, an internal structure, financially independent, who took the name "Rotary".
initial appropriations and donations were not very fruitful. After the death of Paul Harris, which took place in Chicago in 1947, however, the huge donations made in honor of the Foundation did the real arm of Rotary in the World. On that occasion Rotarians contribute a verse to The Rotary Foundation of $ 2 million.

The force of the Foundation with the great availability receipts rose. For young people launched a special program called "Ambassadorial Scholarship", starting to call the participating students "Paul Harris Fellow.
The operation was a success. The level of awareness and dissemination of the title "Paul Harris Fellow" encourages the Foundation to use it better. In 1957 his visionary directors created an official statement that acknowledged the title of "Paul Harris Fellow, Foundation donors who pay $ 1,000.
To encourage the repetition of donations, whether by individuals, the initial recognition, consists of a scroll and a badge with the portrait of Paul Harris, was enriched with the inclusion of some of the distinctive gemstones: sapphires and rubies, reflecting the repeated donation. Today
PHF have 10 degrees, 10 levels of value, from the simple to the first payment of 1,000 (thousand) dollars in the last one that shows the payment of 10,000 (ten thousand) dollars.
Here is the sequence:

first • $ 1,000 - $ 2,000 from distinctive
• - •
a sapphire from $ 3,000 - two sapphires
• from $ 4,000 - three sapphires from
• $ 5,000 - four sapphires
• from $ 6,000 - five sapphires

"great gift" means a minimum contribution of $ 10,000 paid by an individual or a couple. All donations paid to the Foundation by a donor or a pair are counted in order to receive this award, regardless of cause or mode of payment ..
donors who so request can enrich the badge with a diamond.

Those who qualify will be invited to an inauguration ceremony in the RI Headquarters in Evanston, during which their portraits and their biography will be applied in the interactive gallery of the Arch C. Klumph Society. The members of the Arch C. Since then, every year, in memory of our great founder, in the various clubs in the world are assigned in relation to payments made to the RF, these prestigious awards, giving the title of a Paul Harris "(PHF) to whom, Rotary or Rotary," it is particularly distinct, with his profession, with its activity and availability, to bear witness to the validity of the principles and actions of the Rotary Foundation, helping to spread understanding and friendly relations between the exponents of the various activities and the achievement of world peace.
Today awarded the PHF are over one million.
Here are the figures at 30 June 2008 (latest available).

Paul Harris: 1,126,784
Benefactors: 77,776
Major Donors: 10,105
In all these years, thanks to continued contributions, the Foundation has implemented important initiatives is that local application of Thick world.
The most famous and important, as we all know, the one dedicated to the eradication of Polio from the world that our District will celebrate in a few days with great joy!

Dear friends,
believe that adding more to this prestigious scholar, who has always wanted a great asset to our Sardinia, is completely unnecessary.
This love for our island is far from what transpired wanted to expose ourselves in very interesting conference.
He wanted, above all, bring out the lights and shadows of our problems: because our development is held back and everything, however, and we have to do to get out of trouble.
In a society that now lives in good and evil "globalization" is not isolating or creating barriers that we to improve the situation. E 'valuing ourselves, our products, our resources, we can, indeed, compete on equal terms and with conviction in world markets.
E 'advertising' our product quality, "giving him a strong recognition and full and fair value, we can ensure that it is compared with others and win the challenge.
only way the future will be less gray and less precarious, and our young people can fully play the role they deserve and that today, however, have not. The only way to avoid the brain drain in search of employment, often only precarious.
All of us, practitioners and professionals from business, we have a great responsibility: to work together in this direction to turn in our favor a game that would otherwise be lost from the start. The Rotary and his men have a duty to accept this challenge.
Thanks Prof. Savona His scholarly discussion of this and inducements to this "doing".
A warm applause greeted the end of the speech, which was followed over the deep gratitude, the exchange of traditional gifts.
President Dr. Antonio Sulis on behalf of all the Club has honored Prof. Savona with the awarding of Paul Harris Fellow, with a Sapphire, the maximum expression of honor at the Rotary. Our President then, beyond the banner to the club, wanted to give Him honor of my book "ROTARY INTERNATIONAL, sociological study of a nonprofit association of professionals," This year our District has wanted to print, especially for new Rotarians to raise awareness of our association and that is the result of my thesis university.
conference so interesting that I hope can be further proposals at our Club
Greetings to all
Vol
Mario
