Rotary appoint the lawyer John Hewko as the new Secretary General.

Rotary International has appointed John Hewko, a lawyer with extensive international experience in public and private sectors, as new chief executive of the international humanitarian service, entrusted the Secretary-General.
In this role, Hewko will be responsible for more than 600 employees of Rotary International and its branch of the activities of charities, the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. The Secretariat of Rotary, with headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, and regional offices in seven other countries, supports the activities of more than 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas, with an affiliation consists of 1.2 million men and women. The Rotary Foundation annually distributes more than 180 million USD to finance a wide range of educational and humanitarian projects worldwide.
Hewko is a former member of the international law firm Baker & McKenzie and was vice chairman of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, an agency of the U.S. government established in 2004 to bring assistance to the poorest countries in the world. John will begin to fulfill its mandate on 1 July, at a key moment in the history of 106 years of Rotary. Hewko will play an important role in the implementation of the new organization's current strategic plan which seeks the expansion of Rotary in areas such as maternal and child health, water and sanitation, prevention and care disease, literacy and basic education and economic and community development. Its mandate will include the successful conclusion of the initiative's main humanitarian Rotary 25 years of his campaign for the eradication of debilitating disease such as polio, an objective already achieved at 99 percent.
Hewko will also be responsible to interact with leaders of government and private enterprises, to improve Rotary's global visibility and forge new strategic partnerships to achieve common objectives and maximize the use of resources. John will also seek to broaden and strengthen the relationships that the Rotary currently has with organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, USAID (U.S. Agency for International Development) and others. In announcing the hiring of
Hewko, President of Rotary International, Klinginsmith Ray, spoke of his "visionary leadership" and predicted that under the leadership of Hewko, Rotary will continue to increase the number of affiliates, will have a greater fame and more involvement in making the world a better place. During his 15 years working at Baker & McKenzie, Hewko had specialized in international business transactions in emerging markets. He participated in the initiation law firm in Moscow and was a senior partner of its offices in Kiev and Prague. While in Ukraine, in the early nineties, Hewko attended a working group that prepared the initial draft of the new Constitution of Ukraine post-Soviet era, and was a founding member of the first Rotary club in Kiev. Before joining Baker & McKenzie, he worked for some of the largest law firms in Brazil and Argentina and, later, to Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in Washington and New York, as responsible for financial transactions and projects Latin America.
In 2004, Hewko went to work in public service, with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC). As vice president responsible for operations and development of the "Compact", his main task concerned the relationship management of MCC with its 26 partner countries in Africa, Asia, South America, Middle East and the former Soviet Union. During his tenure, he was responsible for overseeing the development, negotiation and approval of service agreements with 18 countries, for a total of 6.3 billion USD in infrastructure projects, agriculture, water, sanitation , health and education. Last year, John has added a senior member of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where his work was to prepare documents relating to issues of international development and foreign policies.
Hewko graduated in 1985 from Harvard Law School and received a Masters from Oxford University (where he studied as a Marshall Scholar) and a degree dall'Hamilton College in Clinton, the State of New York. John speaks six languages.

Hewko was selected from a pool of 440 potential candidates for the job. The research committee of the Rotary has partnered with Korn / Ferry International, a leader in the field for recruiting at the executive level. Hewko will replace Edwin Futa, who is retiring after 10 years in office as Secretary General.
